Chapter One :Chapter 1

"Clara, let's get a divorce."

Clara Benson stood at the doorway, face-to-face with her husband, Henry Myers. Two years ago, despite opposition from her family, she agreed to a lightning marriage with him. After signing the papers, he left the country for two years. Now, the very first thing he said upon seeing her again was this.

Henry, dressed in a tailored black trench coat, looked as flawless as ever, but his expression was torn, guilt flashing in his eyes. "I've been with Nova Adams."

Clara was in loose pajamas, making her look even slimmer than usual. She froze for a moment, processing his words, then asked calmly, "She had no idea you were married?"

Two years ago, a deadly outbreak hit country E hard. Death tolls were rising fast.

Just out of grad school, Henry had landed a job at one of the top hospitals in their country. When the outbreak hit, he volunteered to help abroad.

They’d just gotten married.

"Yeah, we rushed into it. Nova was one of the first volunteers, she didn’t know about the marriage," Henry explained.

Clara lifted her lips in a faint, mocking smile. There was sarcasm in her eyes. "So you just pretended to be single to chase another woman?"

"That’s not what happened," Henry immediately denied, his guilt thick in his voice. "Things were really bad over there. Nova saved my life so many times. We were working nonstop. Over time, feelings just… happened."

"Clara, let’s be honest — we never really had that emotional base. If your dad hadn’t saved my grandfather, we wouldn’t have ended up married. Nova and I truly love each other. Isn’t it time you stepped aside?"

Clara let out a short laugh, her expression full of scorn. "Wow, now it sounds like I forced you to marry me, even though you were the one who made the promise."

She had never been close to the Bensons — not growing up with them made her feel like an outsider. Henry’s promise gave her something to hold on to, a reason to stay.

She threw herself into saving the Myers Group when it nearly collapsed financially. Taught herself business from scratch, worked around the clock, lost twenty pounds during that period, all just to pull the company through.

She bent over backwards to find the best doctors for Mr. Myers’s illness.

Anytime her mother-in-law or sister-in-law wanted some luxury item, she paid up without question.

Every single household expense big or small landed on her.

She managed the company all day and still came home to cook and clean.

And after all she had done, all she got in return were four cold words: "No emotional connection."Henry’s face turned red. He stammered, "Sorry… Grandpa really valued you. I thought you'd make a good match for the Myers family, so I went along with it and made you a promise to wait till I came back. If I hadn’t met Nova, maybe we could’ve just kept things polite and civil."

Hearing that, Clara realized there was no point dragging this out. Calmly, she answered, "Alright. Let’s get divorced."

Henry looked surprised and oddly relieved—clearly not expecting her to agree so easily. After hesitating a bit, he asked, "After the divorce… are you planning to stay at Myers Group?"

"I mean, if we’re divorced, why would I hang around?"

Henry went on, "Nova made a major breakthrough in the protein inhibitor project. She’s already been hired by KY International Medical Institute. I’m still under review, and I’ll need to return to E Country soon."

Clara’s eyes widened. "Protein inhibitor? Nova worked on that?"

Those old guys actually kept this from her? What a joke.

Henry’s expression brightened as soon as he brought up Nova. “She’s a genius in medicine—top-tier in drug development. But the corporate world’s too cutthroat and political. She’s too pure for that mess, not cut out for Myers Group."

"But you—you're great at navigating those waters. That’s why Grandpa’s always appreciated you. He might not even agree to us splitting."

The way Henry said it, he made office politics sound like something beneath him. Yet here he was, soaking up all the perks at the top without shame, while looking down on the ones who actually made the business thrive.

Clara let out a cold laugh.

What a joke. She used to think this man was worth marrying.

Henry didn’t notice the mockery in her eyes at all. He spoke with conviction: "As long as you stay with the company, Grandpa won’t force us apart. If you agree, I’ll give you one percent of the shares—you’ll be getting millions in dividends every month."

Clara couldn’t help but scoff. "One percent? You really think that's generous? You're divorcing me and still expect me to clean up after the Myers family? What kind of dreamland are you living in?"

Henry thought he was already being more than fair. The minute Clara started mocking the company, he lost his patience.

His face darkened. "Clean up after us? Don’t flatter yourself. With or without you, Myers Group makes bank."

"KY Medical is a top global institute. Nova and I are going there to contribute to the country. Look at the life you’re living—luxury and comfort—what else could you possibly want?"
